This first chapter of the book speaks and emphasizes the importance of the different kinds of genres as well as the elements of it. Style, design and sources are the three main elements of genre discussed in this chapter. Analyzing the techniques that certain authors use in their writing can aid the reader in understanding the piece and piecing together the genre. This chapter also speaks about the Rhetorical appeals that writers are able to use and how that communicates across to the audience (referring to mode and media). The author can incorporate Ethos, Pathos, Logos or all three to intend to communicate its message to the reader. In addition, the piece can be written, visual or audio which can likely affect the way in which the reader viewer or listener interprets the work. I see these rhetorical appeals being used often in my everyday life in advertisements and many other types of pieces.
